This heat wave has had some people going to drastic measures to cool off. The most common and effective method people use to keep the temperature down is by turning on their air conditioner. Now one would expect their electric bill to go up a couple of dollars or a couple of hundred dollars depending on the usage.
It’s really not a fun sight to see the numbers increase on your bill as the temperature rises but how would you react if you opened your bill to over $1 million dollars? Whatever your reaction would be, it’s pretty certain that it would not be a pleasant one. Well that’s what recently happened to Kristin Harriger.
The single mom from Abilene Texas went to open her electric bill one day and instead of finding a bill $100 or more than what her normal bill ran her, she was billed for $1,381,783.92. “I opened it. I read it. Then just went, ‘Oh, my gosh. That’s a lot of money,” Harriger told the Abilene Reporter News.
She thought to herself that this was a joke and even went on to take a picture to share with her friends. After contacting her utility company, she came to find out that the bill wasn’t a joke but rather a computing error. Potentia Energy, the utility company, was charging her $1,000 per kilowatt hour instead of the normal 9 cents per kilowatt hour. The utility company accepted their fault and told Kristin that they would send over a corrected bill as soon as they can.
The one thing Kristin is grateful for : “I’m glad I didn’t have auto payments,” Harriger told the Business Insider. “I work on a budget. I’m a single mom with an autistic child who tries to make ends meet. I get my bills and I pay them. Just not ones for over $1.3 million.” So as you are planning on staying cool this summer, do yourself a favor and keep a close eye on your bills before you end up in a predicament such as this.
