Researchers at the Kinsey Institute have proven in a new study that perceived roles and behaviors in a relationship are increasingly changing. The study titled, ‘Sexual Satisfaction and Relationship Happiness in Midlife and Older Couples in Five Countries’ was conducted in the United States, Germany, Brazil, Japan and Spain using 200 couples in each country between the ages of 40 and 70 with relationships lasting from 1 to 51 years. According to the study, the longer the relationship the greater the sexual satisfaction and happiness in the relationship for men. However, for women, it shows very little relationship happiness with lower sexual satisfaction in the beginning and greater sexual satisfaction later.

So why is it this study suggests as a relationship progresses men prefer to cuddle and women are more interested in sex?

Despite the obvious that comes with age such erectile dysfunction and declining health, women have always express themselves emotionally and as they get older and figure out who they are and what they want out of life they become liberated which can increase physical desire.

Conversely, when men commit to long term relationships they let their guard down showing a more sensitive side that women often won’t see until later on in the relationship.

In my opinion, this study further proves what typically happens in a new relationship. For instance, when boy meets girl it’s usually the girl who quickly becomes head over heels. Boy is not quite head over heels but sees potential and thinks the relationship could be something. As time passes girl notices her knight in shining armor is just as human as you and I and slowly comes down off her cloud. Boy sees that girl is in it for the long haul and lets more of his feelings surface.

Now when you conduct a study and throw around fancy words like “relationship happiness” and “sexual satisfaction” it becomes clearer. Nothing has changed. Everyone is finally realizing 2+2=4.
