All-Star point guard Rajon Rondo has been suspended for Game 2 of the Boston Celtics’ first-round playoff series with the Atlanta Hawks after bumping an official in Sunday’s loss. The incident happened with just 41 seconds left in the game when Boston’s forward Brandon Bass was called for a foul which made Rondo furious; thus losing his composure.
What happened next in my opinon looked like Rondo unintentionally tripped, which forced his momentum into referee Marc Davis with his chest. Now i’m far from a Boston Celtics fan but for Rondo to be suspended for such a small unintentional act goes to show you where the NBA is heading. I’ve seen in boxing and in the NFL where referee’s have been knocked out cold for coming between the fighters and players but you don’t see them being suspended or fined. On all serious note, the NBA is slowly becoming more of a circus side show than a professional league. You have players flopping around as if they where hit with a Mike Tyson punch or a brick solely because they refuse to play the game physical and with heart like it is suppose to.
Rajan Rondo is the youngest out of the so called big three and without him, the celtics are going to be playing like a bunch of 50 yr olds whose ankles are one play away from crumbling. The celtics will also be without shooting guard Ray Allen for game 2 who is nursing an ankle injury.
The NBA playoffs are always intense and emotional and thats why it is different than the regular. If the league is going to charge fans an arm and a leg for tickets, at least make sure that you don’t suspend star player for some bogus reasons. It makes the game lose it’s appeal and attractiveness to the average and hardcore fans and this is what David Stern and the rest of the league office needs to think about.
Afterall the fans are the ones paying the players salaries and without them, the NBA will not exist. With that being said, let the players play the game, giving the fans the entertainment aspect that they crave for because it is the playoffs afterall.
