Angela Markel, 57, is the current Chancellor of Germany. She joined the Christian Democratic union in 1990. Soon after she was appointed to Helmut Kohl’s cabinet as minister for women and youth. Not only is she the first female Chancellor of Germany, she is also the first former citizen of the German Democratic Republic and the first woman to lead Germany since it became the first modern nation-state in 1871.
