It’s a devastating time for the parents of Trayvon Martin. Trayvon Martin, 17, was shot and killed last month by a neighborhood watch volunteer while walking back to his father’s house after a trip to the 7-eleven convenient store.
George Zimmerman, the neighborhood watch volunteer made a 911 call when he spotted a guy walking in his area. He reported to the police dispatcher that the guy had a grey hoodie and that he looked suspicious. The police dispatcher told him not to approach the guy. However, Zimmerman did just that.
Under the National Rifle Association’s stand your ground laws in Florida you have the right to shoot your offender. However Trayvon’s intent was not to offend anyone. Zimmerman shot and killed the Trayvon because he looked suspicious in his area.
Zimmerman is protected by the ‘stand your ground’ laws, however the parents of the Trayvon Martin will not stand for that and are now fighting for justice. Today Trayvon’s parents appeared on NBC’s show calling for Zimmerman’s arrest.
During an interview on NBC’s “Today” show, the parents stated that George Zimmerman stalked their son because he was black and had gotten away with murder after claiming he fired in self-defense.
“I strongly feel he needs to be arrested, because a crime was committed,” Tracy Martin told Matt Lauer. “My son is murdered, my son is not with us no more. Nothing can bring him back.”
The grieving parents appeared alongside their lawyer, Benjamin Crump, who suggested that race played a factor in the reluctance to arrest Zimmerman.
“It’s crazy that this family has to wait for grand juries and stuff when, if it was the other way around, they would have arrested their son on the spot,” Crump said.
Today thousands gathered in New york’s Union square wearing hoodies in support towards the quest for justice for the Martin Family. People gathered chanting “we want arrests!” and “Are we Next?”
Spitters I say sign petitions, scream, shout and join the quest for justice for Trayvon Martin anyway you can. We must stop laws like these. Who knows! Someone we know can be next and we should not let that happen.
