The show opened with a prayer from the host, Mr. Cool J, for Whitney Houston who died the previous day.
“There’s no way around this,” he said, addressing a silent crowd. “We’ve had a death in our family, and so at least for me, the only thing that feels right is to begin with a prayer for a woman we loved, for our fallen sister, Whitney Houston.”
The crowd sincerely obliged. A sincere prayer on a Hollywood stage now that’s definitely something you don’t see everyday. The show went on. Bruno Mars rocked out with his energetic 70’s flow killing the stage with James brown, and Michael Jackson inspired moves. He even yelled out to the crowd, “Get up off your rich asses!”. They did just that! And swayed side to side to his beat. Bruno your the man for that one! The night was definitely entertaining. Now, let’s talk about Rihanna and Cold Play’s performance. Rihanna opened up with her debut single, “Found Love”. This time, she actually had real choreography for her hit single instead of jumping around like a deranged woman. The choreography was complex, energetic and fun. However, upon transitioning to a slower tempo duet with Cold Play, she sounded horrible! Her voice cracked a lot and she was short of breathe for most of the song. Cold Play smoothly finished off with “Paradise”.
Chris Brown rocked the stage with his new single, “Turn up the music” and “Beautiful people”, he graced the stage with his fancy footwork. He’s a performer and nothing short from that. Lady Blue, Katy Perry that is, came on stage with her single, “ET” and transitioned to “Part of me”. Ms. Perry definitely did her thing by showing lots of energy with great vocals. Now let’s talk about lady pink, Ms. Barbie herself or shall we call her little monster for now on? There’s been word that after the show a lot of barbs have joined Gaga’s monster pit. Tisk! Tisk! Nikki. Your psychotic display tonight might’ve killed your career a tad bit. I’m sure her barbs are a little confused and misled. Nikki, let Gaga do her thing. I would advise you to keep your own gimmick.
Jennifer Hudson performed Whitney’s #1 Hit “I will Always Love You” also paying homage to the recently past artist. It was a “perfect pitch” performance indeed with emotion exuding throughout her performance. Rest in peace Whitney you will not be forgotten. However I was expecting more performed tributes for her. I guess what they say is true, the show must go on.
