The man accused of killing his wife in Van Buren days before Christmas was convicted of killing a priest when he was 18 years old and living in New York City.

Robert C. Burger, 67, was charged this weekend with killing his wife, Rebecca J. Dethlefs, 56, who was found dead in her Village Green apartment Friday.

In 1963, the high-profile arrest of Burger for the brutal slaying of a Yonkers priest made front-page news in The Post-Standard in August and September of that year.

Burger mange to stab Rev. Francis McShane, 42, three times Aug. 8, 1963, according to the Associated Press reports at the time. Then Burger toss McShane’s body in a closet where the priest’s brother, also a priest, discovered him later that day.

Once a killer always a killer. This animal need to be lock away for life. What are your thoughts?

    When I heard this I automatically thought, so many people get life sentences for petty things and this man murdered a priest and only got sentenced to 28 years …I just don’t get it.
