This is such a sensitive subject so I try to be careful as possible when writing about religion. I apologize in advance if I offend someone that is not my intention at all. As I was sitting down to write this article I realized I needed help from my peers and my friend provided me with one quote that basically sums it up, for me anyway. “When you’re young you believe in yourself. You’re a God. You’re invincible. But as you grow older and people get sick, including yourself, and people around you die, you feel the need to believe in a higher power. A higher purpose than yourself that can explain the lingering questions you never got the questions to as you matured”- Ren Smith.
He could not say it any better. There is something scary but humbling about aging. Something can happen to you that is so earth shattering that even the non religious might find themselves praying in their time of need.
Why is this? Things happen in life we just can’t explain. We can try and try and try to make sense out of it but we simply can’t and when we look to others they can’t either. If you are non religious and find yourself talking to God or an Higher Power that’s fine, your just acknowledging that there is a Higher Power and at that moment you need His/Her help or some sort of guidance. Furthermore, as we get older we think about marriage and children and what role religion will play in their lives. Even if you choose not to mention it, it will come up because religion is everywhere.
Speaking personally, religion has always been a roller-coaster ride for me. I’ve always believed in a Higher Power but never believed everything in the Bible because it is man-made. I make my own personal relationship with God and go from there. I think twice about my actions and decisions, if it feels wrong than 9 out of 10 it’s wrong.
Humility and religion walk hand in hand to me. We all have different forms of position and power whether in or personal life or our career field. At the end of the day we all need something to bring us back down to the ground.
As we get older time tends to fly and life hits us hard. Some people find religion aides them in this process. Never be afraid to research and learn different religions you’ll be surprised what you can learn even as an adult.
