To be a woman is to be a being of virtue, warmth, and compassion while also possessing the qualities, strength and intellect as well, if not better than our counterparts. James Brown’s 90′s hit said, “It’s A Man’s World” but also mentions “it would be nothing without a woman or a girl”. The truth is the world has changed and still is changing. In the very beginning there was the notion that a man is the only brain for his family and in every way of life, and a woman’s idea’s were mere rantings of a brainless shell.
Sadly, that notion still goes on today even after displays of countless accomplishments and advancements by women who possesses strength and knowledge beyond measure. There are lots of business minded women around then ever before. We do more then carry life in the womb, we run organizations, save lives and still we struggle with position in our society. So the real question is when will society show women some equality?
According to the World International Forum’s newly released 2011 Global Gender gap report, if you are a woman looking to move overseas, Iceland is reported the best country for a working woman. After reading that statement I was stuck thinking when was the last time I heard any mention of Iceland, yet it is the #1 country for a working woman?! The report observed 135 countries and out of them Iceland topped them all!
According to the Huffington post, the report gets its rankings by measuring the gap between men and women in four key areas:
1. Economic participation and opportunity, which covers the wage gap as well as the percentage of women working and women working in high-skill jobs.
2. Educational attainment, which includes access to all levels of education.
3. Health and survival, which measures life expectancy and mortality rates.
4. Political empowerment, which measures how women are represented in decision-making structures (i.e. the government)
The U.S. is in the top 20, between the U.K. and Canada. Yemen is the worst country to live in due to culture’s harsh treatment to women. While 90 percent of gaps in life expectancy and access to education have been closed worldwide, women continue lag behind men at work and in politics.
Underestimating goes a long way, We women have come a long way and we must still push for better. We are more than eye candy and since when did sex determine the intellect of an individual? That is the true ignorance of our world if you ask me.
