The phrase, “cleanliness is next to Godliness” goes a long way, but with the outbreak of E. Coli in Germany you have to ask yourselves have they heard of the well known saying?
Ok let’s not go so far as pointing fingers yet, according to CNN the source of the E. Coli outbreak is unknown, however it’s been traced from cucumbers sent from Spain but it isn’t clear whether it was infected from its source or transit.
The European Union states that the suspected batch of cucumbers that was either imported from Denmark or the Netherlands is under investigation. For those who may not know E. Coli scientifically known as Escherichia coli is a bacteria found in the digestive tract of people and animals.
It’s usually harmless in the digestive tract as its needed for the aid in production of Vitamin K and break down of certain nutrients; however the transmission onto food and water is a fatal intake for the consumer.
Consuming this strain of bacteria may result in abdominal cramping, diarrhea and may lead to major organ damage such as renal failure. Recently, there has been 22 deaths and 2,200 sickened! The healthier adult stands a chance of winning the fight against the septic invasion; however the elderly and young children are at greater risk.
My heart goes out to these people and their families. However, why is this so serious??? According to the European Food Safety alert Network, the E. Coli strain found in the cucumbers EHEC, Enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli, just another fancy word expressing that its virulent and it cannot be treated with antibiotics!
I think I speak for all my Americans and the rest of the world when I say transport any similar goods from Germany and Spain is a huge NO NO! Also to my restaurant workers out there continue washing your hands on your ins and outs of the rest rooms, we appreciate it.
Update! Now the E.coli outbreak is being blamed on German veggie sprouts grown in an organic farm in Germany and the story continues. The European Union and European Food Safety alert network needs to get their story straight and stop the blame game and find an effective way of dealing with this tragedy and raising the scale on the preventative measures.
