Let’s crack bottles and solute the red and the blue! Happy Flag Day to my fellow Haitians everywhere!!! And as we celebrate what has brought or upheld our pride, we remember our past as we look on to the future screaming out L’union fait la force! Through unity there’s strength that is but let’s go back into time a little.
The Haitian flag wasn’t always red and blue, in fact, there were white stripes which were eliminated. The white stripes were eliminated in 1803 with great purpose. The removal of the white stripe symbolizes the abolition of the White Man’s control and the union of blacks and mulattoes in Haiti. The arms are composed of a palm tree under the Phrygian cap of liberty and ornamented with trophies with a banner across the bottom saying “L’Union Fait La Force”.
The truth is, I being a proud Haitian myself can admit to saying we have a big problem with unity, yes I said it! In fact, at times I still see the partition amongst us. Most times we lack unity among the different states within our country. I have heard people debating which place is better within our own nation. I say all of that is pure non-sense. We’re One Flag and one nation.
Whether you’re light-skinned, dark- skinned, with course hair or silky hair or from the capital or the countryside if you are Haitian blooded damn it! all the other factors shouldn’t matter. At the time of war our fore fathers fought for this country we hold so dear to our hearts, so there is no point of being anything less than unified.
We shouldn’t look down on each other for the area in Haiti in which we came from, when in history we dealt with slavery and captivity together. Our struggles is what moves us and our triumphs is what define us and there’s no better way to triumph but in unity.
I love my nation, the culture, our stories, and our food!!! And last but not least my people all colors that is, and on this day May.18, I say Haiti stand up! Screaming out L’union Fait force!!! Ayiti sak passeee Cherie!
